Recent SMU PhD Graduates

Yueqiang Cheng
PhD in Information Systems

Upon graduation from the School of Information Systems (SIS), Yueqiang will join the CyLab of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States of America as a Postdoctoral Fellow. Prior to his doctoral education, he received his Bachelor of Computer Science from the School of Software Technology in Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China. During his doctoral studies at SMU, Yueqiang had the opportunity to visit CMU as a Research Scholar and worked with Professor Virgil D. Gligor on system security.

During his doctoral programme, Yueqiang’s research interests focused on virtualisation-based system security (e.g., building trusted path and isolated execution environment); trusted computing (e.g., attestation); and Return-oriented Programming (ROP) attacks and defense. When Yueqiang joins CMU’s CyLab, he will continue with his previous research and explore new research topics including software-based attestation on embedded and mobile systems; Control Flow Integrity (CFI) violation and enhancement; and system hardening on ARM platforms combined with virtualisation and TrustZone technologies.

Swapna Gottipati
PhD in Information Systems

Swapna joined SMU as an Assistant Professor (Education) in May 2014 upon obtaining her PhD in Information Systems in SMU. She teaches undergraduate courses related to business processes and data analytics. Her primary research focus is to enhance data mining models, while she applies her research findings to software, education, security and mobile applications. Her other research interests include text analytics, natural language processing, information extraction, opinion mining, machine learning and social networking.

During her PhD studies, Swapna was a visiting scholar at Heinz College, Carnegie Mellon University in 2013 where she worked in the Language Technologies Institute on data analytics projects. In recognition of her academic achievements, she was awarded the prestigious Presidential Doctoral Fellowship by SMU in 2013. Previously, she was a senior instructor in SIS and her teaching profile included courses in data management, data mining and analytics, business intelligence, business process management, enterprise integration and software engineering.

Fuwei Jiang
PhD in Business (Finance)

Fuwei obtained his PhD in Business (Finance) from the Lee Kong Chian School of Business. He received his MSc in Finance from SMU and Master in Economics from Xiamen University, China. He will be joining the School of Finance at Central University of Finance and Economics in China as an Assistant Professor in Finance in July 2014.

His main research interests include asset pricing, forecasting, investment and international finance. He has presented his research in conferences such as the Financial Management Association International, China International Conference in Finance, Australasian Finance & Banking Conference, and Q-group meetings. He has won the Chinese Finance Association Best Paper Award on Investment and Journal of Financial Research Outstanding Paper Award. His research has also been published in academic journals such as the Journal of Portfolio Management, Pacific-Basin Finance Journal and Journal of Financial Research.
