Recent Issues in Private Wealth and Trust Law

Hot on the heels after its founding of the Centre for Cross-Border Commercial Law in Asia (CEBCLA), SMU’s School of Law (SOL) partnered with the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) to organise a one-day symposium entitled “Recent Issues in Private Wealth and Trust Law” on 26 May 2014. Convened by CEBCLA’s Academic Director Professor Tang Hang Wu, STEP’s Chair Ms Goh Seow Chee, and Deputy Chair Mr Lee Chiwi, the symposium aligned with CEBCLA’s goal to serve as the hub for scholars, leading practitioners, governments and policy makers who are pursuing rigorous, informed and significant research in commercial law in Asia.

Featuring eminent practitioners, bankers, wealth advisors and academics, the symposium comprised individual sessions that covered a wide range of topics including: (i) trustee investment issues and liability excluding clauses; (ii) recent equity and trust law decisions in Singapore; (iii) cross-border issues on mental capacity; and (iv) legal and non-legal issues on wealth planning and Asian family businesses. It concluded with a distinguished panel that discussed case studies on cross-border businesses and tax implications. Participants commended the event for bringing practice and academia together to engage in rigorous and informed debates on difficult legal issues faced by the wealth management industry.
