Open Access Policy for Faculty, Staff and Students of SMU

The Open Access Policy for SMU was approved at the Research Council Meeting on 24 October 2013 by the President, Provost and Deans.

The purpose of this policy is to provide global open access to the research conducted by the faculty, staff and students of SMU within the framework of open access principles. Dissemination of SMU research output through open access will make SMU scholarship more easily and broadly discoverable and available to anyone in the world. This will help to increase the visibility of the ideas, the results and the authors, as well as help to increase citations and enhance the overall reputation of the University. The policy provides you, as faculty, staff and students, with options on sharing your papers and does not limit you from publishing with any journal or publisher.

We strongly encourage you to deposit a copy of your research papers with the Library and make it open access where possible. You can choose the level of access in SMU’s institutional repository, InK from:

  • open access to full text
  • SMU community access to full text
  • abstract only

Publications received by the Library will only be uploaded to InK after the Library staff has consulted with the relevant faculty members and conducted any necessary enquiries on copyright restrictions. Access to these publications will abide by contractual agreements entered into by faculty with publishers that are made known to the University Library. The Library provides guidance and support on all aspects of publishing of research publications on InK. More information about open access and copyright is available at LibFAQ.

Please do not hesitate to contact the ppyeo [at] smu.edu.sg (Library) if you need help with depositing your papers.
