How Smart Systems Enable More Liveable Cities

SMU Office of Research & Tech Transfer - Making cities more liveable is an imperative given the rapid increase in urbanisation worldwide. The liveability of a city is a result of the ways in which a wide range of human and social needs are met, as well as the design and operation of many types of services and infrastructure.

Vinton Gray Cerf, Butler Lampson and Richard Karp are internationally-acclaimed computer scientists. They each received the Turing Award (the equivalent of the Nobel Prize in Computing) for different types of ground-breaking work. All three of them have made contributions that have re-defined and expanded the capabilities of what computers, software and systems can do. In short, these three Speakers have all played instrumental roles in the evolution of computing in ways which have enabled “Smart Systems”.

Tan Kok Yam is the Head of the Smart Nation Programme Office (SNPO) and Deputy Secretary (DS) in Strategy Group of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). In his role as Head/SNPO, he coordinates the Singapore Government’s plans, and engagements with the public and private sectors to use information technology in a concerted, integrated manner to achieve maximum positive impact to citizens. As DS (Strategy Group)/PMO, he oversees issues related to data, technology and climate change.

In this session, the Speakers will share their vision and views on how “Smart Systems” can be used to enable more liveable cities now and in the future. Each Speaker will select aspects of city liveability that they feel are important. They will elaborate their personal perspective on what they mean by “Smart Systems” in this context of liveable and smart cities, and how “Smart Systems” should (or should not) be used to meet the challenges of making cities more liveable.

After the presentations, the Speakers will join us for a lively panel discussion that will be moderated by Professor Steven Miller, SMU Vice Provost of Research.
