Research Forum by SMU School of Law and Queen Mary University of London

SMU’s School of Law (SOL) hosted a joint research forum with Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) on 5 June 2014. Held in SMU and attended by over 25 faculty members from both universities, the forum aimed to foster cooperation between the two institutions and facilitate research exchanges on commercial law. In his opening remarks, Senior Counsel and Dean of SOL Professor Yeo Tiong Min highlighted the importance of the joint initiative in furthering the understanding of commercial law in Asia and Europe, particularly with SOL’s recent establishment of the Centre for Cross-Border Commercial Law in Asia.

The forum provided a valuable platform for six junior scholars – Zhang Wei, Christopher Chen and Mahdev Mohan from SMU, as well as Costanza Russo, Andromachi Georgosouli and Gavin Sutter of QMUL— to gain feedback on their research that focused on key issues relating to securities, arbitration, banking law, corporate law and libel law. The commentary panel comprised six senior faculty members – Professor Sir Bernard Rix, Rodrigo Olivares Caminal and Catherine Rogers of QMUL, and Wan Wai Wee, Michael Furmston and Gary Chan of SMU – each of whom was paired with a presenter. Credited for its high quality discussions, the forum also saw the dyads engaging in a lively debate with the attendees who represented a diverse range of jurisdictions.
