SMU faculty and staff attend the International Graduate Scholarship Fair in Shanghai

In October 2013, SMU’s President, Professor Arnoud De Meyer met with Mr Hao Ping, Vice Minister of China’s Ministry of Education (MOE) and Chairman of the China Scholarship Council (CSC) to discuss PhD programme partnership. SMU will work closely with the two institutions to provide partial scholarships to high quality mainland China PhD candidates to pursue our PhD programmes or to undertake a PhD co-supervision programme at SMU.

The International Graduate Scholarship Fair (IGSF) is an annual event organised by CSC. The fair aims at introducing graduate scholarship and fellowship information of overseas universities to excellent Chinese students planning to study overseas for postgraduate degrees or to undertake PhD dissertation research. It also aims at strengthening links between CSC and international education institutions, and enhancing exchanges among Chinese and international universities.

The 2013 IGSF was held between 18 and 26 October 2013 at three cities in China, namely Beijing, Harbin and Shanghai. The fair attracted representatives from more than 80 renowned overseas institutions. Besides open consultations, one-on-one interviews with students from top Chinese universities and an optional 30-minute presentation on graduate scholarships by participating institutions were conducted.

Anthony Tay, Associate Professor of Economics; Ong Chew Hong, Senior Manager from School of Information Systems; and Ang Lay Yong, Assistant Manager from the Postgraduates Research Programmes office at SMU’s Office of Research, represented SMU at the Shanghai fair last weekend on 26 October 2013. They attended to enquiries from more than 30 Chinese students interested in pursuing a PhD programme with SMU or to undertake research collaborations with SMU faculty.
