SMU welcomes two visiting PhD students on the East-Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes

Two PhD students on the East-Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes, will be visiting SMU’s School of Information Systems (SIS) from 10 June to 2 August 2013. The Summer Institute is administered in the United States by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and co-sponsored in Singapore by the National Research Foundation (NRF).


 
  Paul Taele

Paul is a Computer Science and Engineering student from Texas A&M University, College Station. At SMU, he will collaborate with Assistant Professor Richard Davis, and will work on ‘Creative Design Process Tolls and Techniques for Novel Design Spaces in Surfaceless Environment’.

     

 
  David Fuhry

David is also a Computer Science and Engineering student from The Ohio State University, Columbus. At SMU, David will collaborate with Professor Lim Ee-Peng, and will work on ‘Finding and Characterizing Communities in Online Social Networks: Utilizing Content, Links, Interactions and Affinities’.

Paul and David will get first-hand research experience in Singapore, and introduction to science and science policy infrastructure of Singapore, and an orientation to Singapore’s culture and language. The primary goals of the programme are to introduce students to Singapore’s science and engineering in the context of research laboratory, and to initiate personal relationships that will better enable them to collaborate with foreign counterparts in the future. They will work closely with faculty members from SIS and collaborate on interesting projects.
