On 13 October 2018, faculty from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, SMU School of Accountancy, Fudan University and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics came together for the annual Joint School Conference, where faculty would present and discuss their research papers, as well as exchange ideas for future research collaboration.
Held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) Antai School of Economics and Management in Shanghai this year, the one-day conference showcased research presentations by professors from each participating institution, with SMU represented by Assistant Professors Richard Crowley and Sean Shin.
The conference featured the following papers:
1. Title: “The Role of Individual Investment Bankers during IPOs: Evidence from the Chinese Market” (Co-authored with Paul Brockman, Xianjie He and Shuwei Sun)
Presenter: Assistant Professor Huan Zou, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics
2. Title: "Do Firms Tweet Social Responsibility? Evidence from Machine Learning Analysis " (Co-authored with Wenli Huang, Hai Lu, and Wei Luo)
Presenter: Assistant Professor Richard Crowley, Singapore Management University
3. Title: "Regime changes in the relationship between corporate governance and accounting conservatism " (Co-authored with Robert Kieschnick)
Presenter: Assistant Professor Wenyun Shi, Shanghai Jiao Tong University
4. Title: "Understanding Analysts' Use of Macroeconomic News" (Co-authored with Ruiting (Dan) Dai and X. Frank Zhang)
Presenter: Assistant Professor Hui Ding, Fudan University
5. Title: "CEO Overconfidence and Goodwill Impairment" (Co-authored with Holly Yang)
Presenter: Assistant Professor Sean Shin, Singapore Management University
6. Title: "Ambiguity of Tone in Annual Reports and Bank Risk Taking" (Co-authored with Kiridaran Kanagaretnam, Guifeng Shi and Zejiang Zhou)
Presenter: Assistant Professor Wen Li, Shanghai Jiao Tong University
SMU Assistant Professor of Accounting Sterling Huang shares his thoughts regarding the conference, “Researchers from leading schools in Shanghai and Singapore exchange ideas about financial markets across regions in a stimulating and rewarding environment. It marks the effort of our school to expand our influence and recognition within the region.”
Since 2014, the Joint School Conference in various established universities in the region including National Chengchi University in Taipei, Peking University in Beijing, KAIST in Seoul and University of Technology Sydney. Click here to read more about the annual Joint School Conference.
