Professor Jamal Shamsie, a visiting Professor of Strategic Management at the Lee Kong Chian School of Business (LKCSB), from Michigan State University, co-organised a workshop on Asian Perspectives on Creative Industries with Associate Professor Ted Tschang of SMU (LKCSB) and Professor Joseph Lampel from Cass Business School. Professor Lampel was hosted by SMU. About 30 participants attended the workshop which was held on 7 and 8 June 2013 at LKCSB. Professor Rajendra Srivastava, Provost and Deputy President (Academic Affairs) presented the opening remarks. This event thematically ties in closely with one of SMU’s Area of Excellence, Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

The workshop discussed how different creative industries come about and how they operate, with a particular focus on how they inform research on strategy and organisations. Papers covered the motion picture industry, the video game industry, the commercial photograph industry and the fashion design industry, and included countries such as Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand and India. Participants were from Asia, Europe and the United States from institutions such as the Indian Institute of Management, SMU, NUS, Imperial College London, HEC Paris and Michigan State University. The workshop was an important platform for the participants to develop and share their ideas as well as them to receive comments from other participants for further enhancement to their papers.

Moving forward, there is a plan for setting up a regular group or forum in this area with continual connection to SMU. This forum could be organised by the various participating universities so that a momentum is generated in this interesting and emerging research area of interest. There is also desire to build a research community in this area in Asia so that they can contribute to the region with connection to these networks.
